APARI: Awamori = Beauty

It’s an alcoholic drink! No, it’s a cosmetic product! Hey, maybe it’s both! (Well, not exactly.) APARI is a new cosmetic product produced by Yaesen, a distiller of awamori. The company has a blog up too. Interesting. [Via RIK.]

Chu-Chu-Chu Hai!

Yummy chuuhai (or ‘chu-hai’) drinks from Suntory’s Okinawa Series are here with two new flavors appearing on June 20: papaya and passion fruit. (Other flavors are mango, pineapple, shiikwaasaa & tankan.) Be sure to check out the “Special Contents” page which has two kabegami (wallpaper) up to download as well as an “Okinawa Kotoba (vocabulary in this context) Collection”. [Via 壁紙fan!]

Marukai Hawaii’s Okinawa Fair from May 16-21

Marukai Wholesale Mart will be having an Okinawa Fair from May 16th to the 21st (it’s not mentioned on their site yet). Besides the usual fare of delicious foods—including a sale of Kumejima’s Kumesen awamori (samples too!) and Orion Beer—customers of the members-only store will also be able to purchase Okinawa crafts, cookbooks, and music CDs (wha?!). I promise to have a detailed report in a followup entry. I’m thinking of scanning the ad and posting it on the web but I’ll wait to see if it shows up on Marukai Hawaii’s website.

[Updated 06.05.22] So I broke my promise about the “detailed report”. Sorry. I’ll try again next year. :(

Monday, May 8th is Goya Day!

Sanshin Day (3/4) has passed, and so has Sanba Day (3/8). What’s next? Goya (gooyaa) Day!!! I haven’t done much any research on the “history” of this special day that worships one of Okinawa’s favorite vegetables but what the hey, let’s celebrate! Naname has a “Kinen Trackback Taikai” happening over at the やむやむ (yum yum) blog. I was also fortunate to find this very cool website called Okinawan Style through Naname’s which has a lot of neat things to view but what a few of my readers may want to check out is their stock of Okinawa-themed icons and wallpaper. The site also sells images of Okinawa that can be found at their Okinawan Style Pics*Blog. Very cool stuff. [Via やむやむ.]

A Glimpse of Okinawa at San Fran’s Cherry Blossom Festival

LJ blogger gekka_no_neko (who, btw, does awesome work on all things Gackt) recently posted an entry on the sites and sounds (oh, and the tasty food like Okinawa soba and sataa andaagii) of this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival in San Francisco. The parade featured a performance by the Northern California Okinawa Kenjinkai (pictured above) complete with shiisaa and eisaa drummers with musical accompaniment.

G_n_N also spotted an Okinawan store in Japantown called Akabanaa (pictured above) with a banner that reads: “The unique products from Okinawa. Coming Soon!” Cool!

[Nifee to gekka_no_neko for the story and pics! Link.]
