Makishi Market (Naha, Okinawa)
Internet-Okinawa photographer/correspondent, Myron Akana has just returned from a trip to Okinawa with tons of new photos to share on i-O’s Flickr site! He attended the 2006 Naha Eisa Fest and captured some great pictures of some of the performances, including the dynamic youth Eisa group, Churasa!

Churasa - 140 photos in the Churasa photo set
So please, visit our Flickr photo gallery and enjoy the sights and excitement of Okinawa.
Lots of beautiful (and interesting) pics Myron!
Thanks, Richie. I used a new Nikon DSLR and shot over 600 photos. Finally got through editing them for Donna to post. Now to attack the 6 hours of video I shot as well.
Gah! 600 photos! I spoke to Donna last night (she was also at the Mililani Hongwanji bon dance) and she mentioned your new Nikon DSLR. Looking forward to seeing the rest of ‘em.
Uh…sorry, Richie, what you see is what you get. This was the first time I used my new camera, plus I shot the Churasa series using existing light, i.e., no flash, so there were a lot of blurred shots, which I chose not to post. Those girls are dynamos of action (notice that in many of the shots their feet are off the ground) and the slower shutter speed I used was inadequate to freeze them. Still, I probably posted over 400 photos, with the bulk split between the “Churasa” and “Okinawa 2006″ albums. I hope to do better when I return to Okinawa in October for the Naha Matsuri and the 4th Worldwide Uchinanchu Taikai. Stay tuned.
You’re already headed back there in October? Cool.
Oh, maybe I forgot to tell you…I’m retired now. So I can go to Okinawa anytime my pocketbook will allow. I’m also going in late January with Naka’s Travel (that’s a plug) for the Nago Sakura Matsuri. That should be pretty.
I’ll finally be able to go back to Okinawa in March of next year! Yay!
Good for you. I’m working with Naka’s Travel (another plug) to develop a new itinerary for our April tour. It’s intended for folks who are repeat visitors to Okinawa and may include another destination as well. Right now I’m researching Hong Kong. Stay tuned.
