A Great Finish for 2006 Miss Universe Japan’s Kurara Chibana

So, she didn’t win the crown but I think first runner-up is an awesome finish for CHIBANA Kurara, Japan’s 2006 Miss Universe.

Project Esperanza

Received this message in my inbox this morning and comes via the HUOA’s Bonnie Miyashiro (thanks!):

We just received this message from the 4th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival (Taikai) Executive Offices to publicize an event of the festival entitled, “Project Esperanza” for any former overseas student, researcher or other persons interested in this event. Free Eisā Music!

Ah, it’s definitely Bon Dance season here in Hawaii. In Okinawa it’s the Eisā Matsuri that’s in full-swing and mp3 downlaod site mF247 has a collection of songs available (check out their ‘Realtime Ranking’ リアルタイムランキング for quick links to the songs) to keep you dancing into the night.

Okinawa Podcasts Rock!

Here’s another group of podcasts from Okinawa that I highly recommend subscribing to. Urumax is a website that offers many things (even wallpaper for you Mac/PC) but I believe they have some of the best Okinawa-related (of course) podcasts available on the ‘net. I subscribe to my podcasts with iTunes but use whatever app you have to, there are several great shows to choose from (my fave is the music-related podcast called “Tsukasa to Yoshiko no Shimauta Fairu [File]”).

If you haven’t subscribed to IREI Asano’s FM Okinawa Podcast yet (what’re you waiting for?), she added a new corner called “Asano to Yozora no Shita de”.

Radio Okinawa Podcasts are available here, but there’s nothing notable for music lovers at this time.

MYSTIC Sounds

Do you like Puffy, Judy and Mary, or Mummy the Peepshow? Have you heard of Mystic?

Oh me, oh my, scrolling through the indie music releases again when I discovered Okinawan band Mystic. I think I’m in love. Produced by former Judy and Mary bassist Yoshihito Onda, Mystic’s second album “Heart Work” is due out September 6, 2006.

Think ska base, think Puffy-style dual-female harmonies, think sort of “Orange Sunshine”-era Judy and Mary with a little bit of Ketchup Mania thrown in.

Does this excite you? Then definitely buy the album.

Do you want to hear them? Then first try out their music samples page.

Official home page here.

Count me in for this one since I’m a fan of Puffy and JAM. CDJapan has the band’s catalog on sale over here but you’ll have to check out @TOWER.JP to purchase their first mini album, “sparkling life!!”. You’ll also want to check out the all-girl punk band—also from Okinawa—Bleach if the news about MYSTIC interests you.
