My oyaji (dad) alerted me to an article from the Honolulu Advertiser’s “Taste” section that featured Randy Kuba and his company Awamori Spirits’ line of awamori drinks. (His company was also featured in a MidWeek article several weeks ago.) The news article’s title is “Cocktails served up with a karate kick” and besides having drink recipes, there’s also a little history on Randy’s company and how he came up with the idea to import those tasty bottles of awamori outside of Okinawa. How about celebrating the new year with awamori cocktails instead of champagne? (Or just drink both since it’s the new year! :D)
I highly recommend mixing CraZcrane silver with any citrus juice…the Gold is too spicy. Mix a gallon of Tampico Mango punch, a bottle of either Sunsing (the 15% alc. one) or CraZ silver, and a bunch of orange/lemon/lime slices in a punch bowl. It’s really tasty, and you can’t taste the alcohol (one of the biggest selling points of Awamori - no burn like Vodka, etc). Deadly punch that’s quite popular here now.
Right now we are developing an Awamori Cake, similar to the famous sake-cake you can buy in Okinawa.
We have an Awamori Club page on myspace (www.myspace.com/awamorclub). Check it out sometime for info on tasting events around town, and membership as well!
